So You Wanna Leave a Legacy?

You have to have AIM – I have a dartboard at my condo  One day my 9yr old was throwing darts and having some troublehitting the target.  In fact, she missed the entire board and the darts kept sticking to the wall.  When she grabbed the next dart, I told her, “Honey, don’t release it until I tell you to…a little to the right, no you’re other right, up a little…now close your left eye and focus on that bullseye…NOW THROW IT!”  BAM, she hit the green part surrounding the bullseye!  We high-fived and there she was smiling at me.  The difference was that she had AIM.

What is your AIM?  It’s time to get laser-focused and drop the clutch!  Everyday Do Something That Outlasts You!  I was in Georgia on Sunday with my daughters and we went to a church we had never been to.  My youngest daughter, Layla, was playing on my smartphone while sitting on my lap and I had forgotten to “mute” the phone.  So right before Communion, my daughter clicks on the Bible App, and there on full blast…

2 Corinthians 7:13
“Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”

My reaction was just as important as anything in that instant.  Was I going to angrily storm out of the church?  Was I going to apologize to everyone and sit there ashamed?  This was my opportunity to do something that would outlast me.  So I did it.

I smiled and closed my eyes and hugged my daughter tight.  After a few seconds passed (it is always good to let some time elapse before we react), I told her I think this church needed to loosen up a little bit and I’m glad it happened.  You see, she didn’t disobey me and she wasn’t being rude or inconsiderate.  Because she embarrassed me doesn’t give me a right to persecute or punish her.  That would be against everything taught in Scripture anyway, so I would be a hypocrite if I got angry and shouldn’t have been at the church to begin with.  We are encouraged to be “like little children” in relation to God, and so little children mess with our smartphones.  I think it was amazing she was interested in the Bible App anyway, right?

By my celebrating this event, I was able to make two positive things happen…I made a forgiving and loving impression on my daughter that will carry on beyond my life, and the church will always talk about the day the little girl played the Bible App before Communion...

What can you do that will Outlast your life?
*Send a handwritten note
*Love someone nobody else wants to love
*Forgive that person you said you never would.
*Give and make a sacrifice that others think is too much…

Love The Struggle - Real Estate is filled with words and phrases like:
*Low Appraisals
*Foreclosure
*Short Sale
*Higher Credit Standards
*Higher Down Payment
*Delayed Closing
*Interest Rates going up

The above can really affect us in the industry.  We have to keep perspective and maintain an attitude of “embracing of the chaos.”  There are hundreds of Realtors and Loan Officers who have left this game.  Whatever you do, whether you teach, raise kids, or run a beauty salon, you "take your licks" as they say.  If you want to create a legacy, you must respond in a way to the struggle that is worthy or admirable.  Do people see you sweat or do you show grace under pressure?  What I love is being straightforward and dealing with details head on.  RUN TO YOUR PROBLEMS, not away from them…someone told me once.

We have lost some great people in Real Estate and we will lose more.  This article is dedicated to Bob Sargent who died last year.  He was a competitor of mine, he worked for a different mortgage company.  But whenever we met up, he showed me love and respect.  He left a good legacy.  He left behind something that would Outlast him.

God’s Blessing to YOU!
